Technology is ever growing and at the rate it changes, keeping a technology oriented classroom gives students the upper-hand in not falling behind. Personally, I almost always had computers integrated into my classroom and without having that valuable time to learn and study the working of computer and internet browsing, I wouldn't know how to easily adapt to new piece of technology that comes out. My being able to work an iPhone is directly related to my knowledge of my the first iPod nanos and computer interfaces. Technology is a huge part of society today and exposing children to it at a young and letting them grow alongside the technology only makes them more successful in the future.
ISTE Standards work as great life goals and mentor goals in addition to being a well-rounded educator. This list of standards are compiled to effectively navigate the steering of young minds towards where they need to go. A specific standard stuck out to me in particular. Making students great citizens is a great aspect to work in teaching philosophies. I, personally, enjoy social reconstruction and making students politically awake to the climate we live in can prepare them for a real outlook into how our society runs. Sure, education and knowledge transfer is important, but molding children into being the type of passerby that you'd want to surround yourself with is important as well. On the flip side, being a leader may be difficult because I believe, so much, that we are on the journey together and collaborative efforts made help develop young minds so much more than just a dictator preaching to bunch of impressionable young minds.
I would agree that along of the young of today are the digital natives. Most in school now are born after the new millennium and they saw the dawn of so many digital and technological inventions far beyond what most grow up with. I also don't think this to be a negative thing. All these improvements are just that. The advancements are to make life easier, safer and faster. We are only on earth for a limited time and making our days full of interaction is important for a meaningful lifetime. In addition, the developments in medicine greatly impact our ability to stay alive and fight harmful diseases. I hope to stay as up to date as I can on technology as an educator because a lot of their success rides on my own. That being said, we also teach each other things. New minds being born bring in new thoughts and different sides we might not have thought of before. It's always important to have healthy discussion and powerful collaboration.
I agree with you that it is very important to show our students how the society runs and to educate them to be a better digital citizen in this era. I believe the best way is not through any particular instruction but through a guided self-exploration so that students will be able to make sense of what they experience.
